P&ID Development for Industrial Combustion Systems: A Practical Guide

A Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) is the backbone of any industrial combustion system package. It’s the document fabricators build from, TSSA reviewers check against, and operators reference for years after commissioning. Getting it wrong — or leaving it vague — creates rework, field changes, and compliance headaches down the line.

What a Combustion P&ID Needs to Show

  • Fuel train components in correct sequence: manual shutoff, strainer, regulator, safety shutoff valves, vent valves
  • Instrumentation: pressure switches, gauges, flow measurement points
  • Control system interfaces — where the BMS and PLC read and act on field devices
  • Line sizing, materials of construction, and design pressures/temperatures
  • Interlock and safety device tagging consistent with the cause-and-effect matrix

Common Gaps That Cause Field Problems

The most frequent issue isn’t missing components — it’s ambiguous tagging. When a valve on the P&ID doesn’t match the tag on the physical device or the PLC point list, commissioning stalls while everyone tries to confirm what’s actually installed. A second common gap is omitting vent valve routing, which matters for both safety review and physical installation.

How P&IDs Connect to Code Compliance

CSA B149.3 and NFPA 86 both expect the fuel train configuration shown on the P&ID to match specific interlock and redundancy requirements based on burner input rating. A P&ID built without those thresholds in mind often needs to be reworked once a TSSA reviewer or inspector gets involved — better to design to the requirement the first time.

Best Practices for Combustion P&ID Development

  1. Confirm burner input rating and applicable code thresholds before drafting
  2. Use consistent tag naming across P&ID, cause-and-effect matrix, and PLC I/O list
  3. Show all safety devices explicitly — don’t bundle them into generic “safety train” blocks
  4. Cross-check against the electrical one-line and control philosophy before issuing for construction
